Michelangelo Grigni and Dimitris Papadiasy and Christos Papadimitriouz Computer Science and Engineering University of California, San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive La Jolla, CA 92093{0114 Abstract Geographical database systems deal with certain basic topological relations such as \A overlaps B" and \B contains C" between simply connected regions in the plane. It is of great interest to make sound inferences from elementary statements of this form. This problem has been identi ed extensively in the recent literature, but very limited progress has been made towards addressing the considerable technical di culties involved. In this paper we study the computational problems involved in developing such an inference system. We point out that the problem has two distinct components that interact in rather complex ways: relational consistency, and planarity. We develop polynomial-time algorithms for several important special cases, and prove almost all the others to be NP-hard.

A Neo-Topological Approach to Reasoning on Ontologies with Exceptions and Comparison with Defeasible Description Logics
This article compares Defeasible Description Logics (DDL) and Topological Approach to reason on Ontologies with exceptions. DDL is integration between Description Logics and Defeasible Logics to deal with monotonic and non-monotonic parts of the knowledge bases respectively. Topological approach tries to reason on inconsistent knowledge bases using the conventional topological operators e.g., i...
متن کاملModeling and manipulating fuzzy regions: strategies to define the topological relation between two fuzzy regions
Topological relations between geographic objects are among the most important kinds of relations to manage in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). However, it its very expensive in storage space to keep these relations explicitly stored. Therefore, the relations are usually not directly stored, but they are inferred from the geometry of the objects. Furthermore, the inference of the topologica...
متن کاملTopological metrizations of trees, and new quartet methods of tree inference
Topological phylogenetic trees can be assigned edge weights in several natural ways, highlighting different aspects of the tree. Here the rooted triple and quartet metrizations are introduced, and applied to formulate novel fast methods of inferring large trees from rooted triple and quartet data. These methods can be applied in new statistically consistent procedures for inference of a species...
متن کاملSimplicial Models and Topological Inference in Biological Systems
This article is a user’s guide to algebraic topological methods for data analysis with a particular focus on applications to datasets arising in experimental biology. We begin with the combinatorics and geometry of simplicial complexes and outline the standard techniques for imposing filtered simplicial structures on a general class of datasets. From these structures, one computes topological s...
متن کاملStatistical Inference for Topological Data Analysis PhD Thesis Proposal
Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is an emerging area of research at the intersection of algebraic topology and computational geometry, aimed at describing, summarizing and analyzing possibly high-dimensional data using low-dimensional algebraic representations. Recent advances in computational topology have made it possible to actually compute topological invariants from data. These novel types ...
متن کاملTopological Inference for Eeg and Meg
Neuroimaging produces data that are continuous in one or more dimensions. This calls for an inference framework that can handle data that approximate functions of space, for example, anatomical images, time–frequency maps and distributed source reconstructions of electromagnetic recordings over time. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) is the standard framework for whole-brain inference in neu...
